September 19th, 2008 is Park(ing) Day, which happens to be the coolest piece of organized, visible, friendly, open-space activism. "PARK(ing) Day is a one-day, global event centered in San Francisco where artists, activists, and citizens collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spots into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public parks."
Last year was the first year that Salt Lake City had it's own participants and there will certainly be many more this year.
It is uncomplicated, yet takes some preparation, which is stylishly laid out in this how-to guide.

I am working on putting together a Park(ing) spot and have been really encouraged by the offers of donation from local businesses to cover costs of sod, trees, etc. The great, second step of the textiles process is donating them the following day to a space/organization in need. Might your friends or place of work like to put a spot together?
So, mark it on your calendar, all you downtown goers, and visit as many beautiful, fleeting open spaces as you can find. Or, better yet, make one of your own.

PARKing day is pretty big in Tucson. There has already been coverage in the Tucson Citizen newspaper. If I can get it to work with my picking up AJ schedule then I am going to participate with Claire. I'll report later how it went.
